“I will totally get this. Prolly even if it costs 99¢.”

“Awesome! Agreed. Will pay a minimal amount for it.”

—The first two comments on Matt’s blog post announcing his first iPhone app, TV Forecast

This was in August 2008, a month after the App Store launched. Looks like some users got a head start on the App Store’s pricing-race to the bottom.

I’m reminded of a forum thread from the same time, maybe a bit earlier: this guy was saying he couldn’t wait for [some biz app] to be made, because he’d need to use it it every day. “I’d happily pay $50,” he said. Then a bunch of replies came: “Are you crazy? $50 for a cellphone app?”

The guy kept explaining that the desktop version of this cost hundreds, that he uses this for work, that $50 is a laughably low business expense - people kept replying, “no one’s going to pay more than $3 for a cellphone game! Look at the games on the RAZR!”

And one final observation: people like to measure everything - screen size, filesize, resolution, number of buttons, number of levels - everything except enjoyment.
