I was commenting on this with the release of iPhone OS 3.0, before I read John Gruber’s guess that auto-correction may not work well for languages other than English:
Now that 3.0 has a Croatian dictionary for auto-correction, I actually find it easier to type Croatian on the iPhone than on my Mac. Emailing my family from the Mac is pretty painful; I hate switching keyboard layouts (I can never remember the shortcut), and how the heck do I keep track of what key which non-English character maps to?
On the iPhone, I tap one key to switch to Croatian. After that, I can type “ici” and have it replaced with “ići”; “moze” becomes “može”, “ces” is “ćeš”. These are very common words, and they’re so annoying to type on a full keyboard that almost no one who also types in English even bothers, in my experience; they just flatten everything to non-accented Latin.
I don’t know what iPhone users do in Croatia - on the computer, they’re used to the wonky layout - but I’m now typing proper Croatian for the first time in ten years.
