I just finished reading Elmore Leonard’s western novella Forty Lashes Less One, and man was it ever fun. If you’ve never read any Leonard, know that at his best he is a simply peerless writer of hardboiled crime fiction; which basically means, unapologetically interesting drama.

Quentin Tarantino has mentioned wanting to adapt Forty Lashes. (He’s already done a Leonard with Jackie Brown, an adaptation of Rum Punch.) I doubt that he’ll ever get around to it, but it would be an absolute blast. The book is gripping from page one, then about a third of the way in it goes from “western” to “tarantinoesque”. You’ll see what I mean.

Get it!
